Barbering Pathway

Barbering is the newest pathway addition at Whites Creek. Barbering focuses on the skills and knowledge needed for individuals interested in careers within the barbering industry. Course content provides students with the opportunity to acquire fundamental skills in barbering theory while applying technical skills related to safety, principles of hair, nail structure, and scalp care.

Additionally, students will learn employability skills that will assist in preparation for any career including communication, customer service, time management, professionalism, marketing, and math skills. While participating in the Barbering program students may acquire hours transferable to a postsecondary institution for completion of hourly requirements needed to sit for the Tennessee Cosmetology and Barber Examiners examination prior to high school graduation.

This will be a unique opportunity in Metro Nashville Public Schools, as Whites Creek is the only school offering a program specific to Barbering.

During the 2022-23 school year, only the Level 1 Course - Barbering I - is available.

  • Barbering I is the foundational level of the Barbering program of study. This course prepares students with work-related skills for advancement into the Barbering II course. Content provides students the opportunity to acquire fundamental skills in both theory and practical applications of leadership and interpersonal skill development. Content stresses safety, environmental issues, and protection of the public and designers as integrated with principles of haircutting, skin, nails and scalp care, chemical and barbershop management. Laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in the barbering industry. Upon completion and acquisition of 340 hours, students are eligible to take the Tennessee Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Examination for a Tennessee Barbering Technician License.
  • Aligned Industry Credential: OSHA 10 General Industry. The OSHA 10-Hour General Industry certification allows students to increase their value as entry-level workers by demonstrating mastery of the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in the general industry workplace. The program also provides information regarding workers' rights and employer responsibilities. OSHA training and certification ensures that workers are more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights.
